THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  The World Bank-aided Kerala State Transport Project (KSTP) phase-II will have new features like avenue trees for upgraded roads (green road concept) and solar-powered street lights.

The decision regarding the new features was taken during the discussions with officials of the KSTP and World Bank in New Delhi last week.

The World Bank officials will visit the state again on June 18 to review the works. According to Joseph Mathew,  project director of the KSTP phase-II, solar-powered street lights would be installed on the roads. “The phase-II of the KSTP will give importance to the concept of green roads. In addition to installation of solar-powered streetlights, there are plans to plant saplings along the stretches. The road will be beautified with landscaping,” he said.

Interestingly, the land which lay abandoned after realignment will be utilised. “The government will conduct a feasibility study on the possibility of utilising the abandoned land. However, most of the land is lengthy without enough width. So some places near the city will be used for construction of multi-level parking lots,” Joseph said.

Discussions are progressing for introducing Public-Private Partnership for the KSTP. Also, the government has asked for the inclusion of additional 1,000-km road under the KSTP for annual maintenance.

“The government has asked for an aid of $ 141 million. The World Bank has given in- principle approval for the inclusion for additional 1,000-km road. The government needs approval of Department of Economic Affairs for the same,” he said.

The department has initiated tender proceedings for the phase-II works of the KSTP. The second phase aims at improving eight corridors which include upgrading 27.76-km Kasargod-Kanhangad Road, 20.90-km Pilathara-Pappinisseri Road, 4.5-km Taliparamba-Iritty Road, 53.12-km Thalassery-Valavupara Road, 132.2-km Punalur-Ponkunnam-Thodupuzha stretch, 87-km Chengannur-Ettumanoor-Muvattupuzha stretch and 41- km Perumpilavu-Pattambi-Perinthalmanna Road.
