THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Promising 1,200-km roads of international standards, the work of State Road Improvement Project (SRIP) is expected to begin next month.
The SRIP, which envisages the development of 1,200 km roads, will be implemented in two packages.
Around 550 km will be selected for heavy maintenance and the remaining 650 km will be upgraded to international standards.
Since no land acquisition is involved in the heavy maintenance of 550 km road, the work is expected to begin soon. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy released the road identification report submitted by Bangalore-based Wilbur Smith Associates here on Tuesday.
According to Chief Operating Officer Abdul Nasar, the tender proceedings for 550 km roads will begin by next month.
“Heavy maintenance include improving the road quality, safety measures and installation of traffic signals. The state roads are divided into south, central and north zones for the execution of the work,” Abdul Nasar said.
He added that heavy maintenance works would be executed either in an annuity mode or with the support from NABARD. The department is currently preparing an estimate of the project.
Upgradation works of the remaining 650 km will begin next year. The state is vying for ADB loan for the implementation of the project. Land acquisition is likely to begin next year.
