Technopark, one of the largest and greenest IT parks in the country, is all set to undergo an energy audit, the second one to be held in the park, spread over 300 acres. The move has been planned as per the Energy Conservation Act, which stipulates energy audit for organisations every three years.

Technopark authorities have invited tenders from energy auditing agencies for the purpose. The first audit was held in the 2004-05 period.

This year, Technopark has earmarked Rs 9 lakh to conduct the audit. “Energy audit will be held in Technopark for the second time. This time, we expect to cut down the power loss during transmission and distribution,” said M Vasudevan, senior manager, business development, of the park.

The auditing agency will assess the sector-wise consumption. Auditors will give various suggestions such as low-cost measures (eg: shifting of furniture so as to allow more daylight into the room); medium-cost measures (eg: use of CFL instead of incandescent bulb); and high-cost measures (replacing old air conditioners with energy-efficient ones).

After preparing the audit report, it will be submitted to the Energy Management Centre, which will assess the report. It is expected that each building could save around 30 per cent energy after the audit.

Technopark hosts as many as 245 IT and ITES companies employing over 32,000 IT professionals. In the year 2010-11, Technopark had purchased power worth Rs 21 crore. The present maximum power demand is around 13 MVA. Technopark is an independent electrical distribution licencee. It was granted licence for distribution of electricity in 1999.

Power distribution and billing for its consumers is done by Technopark as per the terms and conditions stipulated by the Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission. Operation and maintenance of the power distribution system is also carried out by Technopark.
