THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala was hotter by 0.7 degree celsius in 2010, while it received 66 percent excess rainfall during the north-east monsoon, the highest in the last 30 years, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
However, the total rainfall received by the state during 2010 exceeded the normal by only 1 percent. Kerala recorded 10 percent less rainfall during the south-west monsoon, though the north-east monsoon brought 66 percent more rain. Kerala received 314 cm rainfall against the normal 310 cm, Met director K Santhosh said.
Both maximum and minimum temperatures recorded a 0.7 degree celsius rise during March-April last year. Low humidity, less summer rainfall coupled with the effect of dry winds from North India made the state more hotter compared to the previous years. Cases of sunstroke were reported from many parts of the state, mainly Palakkad, then. However, the arrival of south- west monsoon had lessened the impact of the heat.
The south-west monsoon rainfall (from May 31 to July 15) was 10 percent less. Against the normal rainfall of 2142.9 mm, the state got only 1932 mm rainfall. The state, however, mostly depends on this rainfall for its entire needs. But based on Met analysis, which considers a deviation of -19 to +19 as normal, the south-west monsoon was considered normal during last year.
On the other hand, the north-east monsoon hit a 30-year high mark. The north-east monsoon rainfall in the state from October 1 to December 31 was the highest in the last three decades. The state got 825.7 mm rainfall against the normal 498.5 mm (66 percent more).
However, Wayanad presented a bleak picture in 2010. The district recorded 52 percent less rainfall during the south- west monsoon period. Against the normal 2756  mm rainfall, it received only 1329.3 mm. During north-east monsoon, Wayanad recorded 17 percent excess rainfall. However, the overall rainfall in the district during last year was 40 percent less.
The annual climate summary of the country, released by the IMD on Friday, listed 2010 as the warmest year since 1901. This mean that the annual temperature for the country as a whole during 2010 was +0.93 degree celsius above the 1961-1990 average. The  total annual rainfall for the country as a whole was normal during 2010.
