THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Parking near ‘No Parking’ boards is a common scene in the city. People started defying the rule when the number of ‘No Parking’ boards had shown a steep rise in recent times. Unscientific placing of ‘No Parking’ boards on major city roads has invited the wrath of public.
The City Traffic police, which have started studying the number of such boards, will soon come to the rescue of the public.
City Police Commissioner Manoj Abraham told Expresso that he had constituted a committee to conduct a study into the number of ‘No Parking’ boards in the city. “Various departments, such as the Road Fund Board, the City Corporation etc have placed ‘No Parking’ boards at many parts of the city roads. This unscientific placement of boards needs to be checked. A committee of the Traffic Police is studying into it. Soon after we get its report, we will take necessary action,” he said.
The Traffic Police will remove the unnecessary boards, the Commissioner promised.
The recently-inaugurated Sasthamangalam-Vellayambalam road holds ‘No Parking’ boards every 10 metres. The one-km stretch has more than 20 ‘No Parking’ boards. According to the Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB), the planting of the boards is based on the Road Safety norms.
“We erected them based on norms. The implementation and further changes, if any, must be done by the Traffic Police,” KRFB COO Harikesh said.
The roads developed under the City Road Improvement Project hold the maximum number of ‘No Parking’ boards in the city.
Without proper co-ordination among themselves, the PWD, the City Corporation and the KRFB are in a hurry to plant as many ‘No Parking’ boards as they could. Since shops are offering less parking space, shoppers are confused over where to park their vehicles. Public parking lots too are few in the city.
Unless the Traffic Police ensure more parking space, it will create more problems, as the number of private vehicles is increasing minute by minute.
