THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: When the country is witnessing a lot of hue and cry over instances of telephone tapping, a group of youngsters in Kerala are minting money by selling technology to tap mobile phones.
With a tagline ‘are you curious to read your spouse/lover/daughter’s SMS or want to hear what they are talking’, they claim they are targeting doubting spouses, lovers and parents. Since the group is concerned about its misuse, they are unwilling to market the technology in a big way. Bulk SMS is the only medium used to propagate the idea.
When ‘Express’ reporter contacted them over phone posing as a customer interested to spy the phone of a dear one, a guy introduced himself as Roshan said in order to spy on a person, the programmed phone must be gifted to him/her. A fee of Rs 39,000 will be charged by the group for a programmed phone. The programming is usually done on Nokia N-series phones.
Once the targeted person starts using the phone, the customer could simultaneously overhear the conversations and read SMSes. The highlight of the facility is that the customer could enjoy the service even if they change the SIM. ‘’We remind the customers to use a different SIM for spying in order to avoid any suspicion,’’ Roshan said. The user won’t be aware of the spying, they ensure.
When asked whether there was any problem in using the service, he replied there was nothing wrong in spying on one’s spouse, daughter, son etc. However, they clarified that they won’t ask the customer the details about whom they are spying on.
Though the marketing and sale are done in very low key manner, the technology is slowly creeping into different realms of society.
However, existing laws in the country may not allow the use of such phones as it tantamount to tapping.
Legal and ethical issues are also pulling back the proponents of the new technology from giving more publicity to this spy software.
