Thakaraparambu flyover: Talks start again

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It seems the city’s much-awaited development project Thakaraparambu flyover has not been shelved. Following the initiative of Thiruvananthapuram MLA and Transport Minister V S Sivakumar, the project is hopefully getting a rebirth.

The Minister has initiated talks with officials of the Road Fund Board and Thiruvananthapuram Development Authority regarding the rehabilitation of traders of Thakaraparambu, which is the major hurdle before the project.
As many as 56 traders must be rehabilitated from the proposed flyover site. Though a site was decided on to rehabilitate the traders, it was later illegally occupied by a retail giant. Since then, the government did nothing to resolve the issue and the flyover project was reportedly dumped from the City Road Improvement Project (CRIP).
Now, sensing the importance of the flyover for the development of the city, the government is mulling new proposals to rehabilitate the traders.  As many as three proposals came forward in the discussion. Land at Putharikandam Maidan, near Power House Road and Govt Central School, Attakulangara, are the major proposals.
A temporary shed will be constructed on a 95-cent plot near the Power House Road. At Putharikandam Maidan and Central High School, Attakulangara, the proposal is to construct a shopping complex for the traders.
Sivakumar said discussions will continue in the coming week and a suitable solution would be found for the issue. When contacted, traders at Thakaraparambu said that they were ready to accept the government proposals.
However, the government, so far, has made no plans to vacate the stay secured by the Big Bazaar in 2008 against the government acquiring the property.
Thakaraparambu flyover is part of the first Intermediate Ring Road, which passes through Vellayambalam Junction, Thycaud, Choorakattupalayam, Power House Road (access to the southern opening of the Railway Station), Thakaraparambu Road, Vazhapalli, Kavadi Road, Pettah, Naalumukku, Kannammoola, Law College, PMG, LMS and Museum Junction.
The Thakaraparambu flyover, along with the Palayam underpass, are considered major components in the road network development in the city for ensuring efficient and uninterrupted flow of traffic across MG Road. An expert committee headed by Dr N S Sreenivasan had suggested a flyover at Thakaraparambu after a series of studies in 2002.
