THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Next week, the City Road Improvement Project (CRIP) will pass another deadline, while some major works are still pending. The CRIP work was slated to complete on November 30. However, a slew of problems, from land acquisition to the Kerala Water Authority’s (KWA) sewerage issues, are delaying the works. The TRDCL, concessionaire of CRIP, is executing the Phase-II and Phase-III works simultaneously.
Meanwhile, the Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB) has tentatively fixed the new deadline in March.
According to KRFB, some of the major CRIP works are nearing completion. Chief Operating Officer of KRFB P C Harikesh said works on MG Road and Kumarapuram-NH Bypass Road have been completed. Except junction improvement works at Peroorkada, the Kowdiar-Peroorkada road work is over. Secretariat-Ottukuzhy road work is progressing, he said.
However, owing to the failure of land acquisition along the Pazhavangadi-East Fort stretch, the upgradation of MG Road has been limited to the LMS-Overbridge stretch. The KRFB is yet to acquire a 650-metre stretch at Vazhayila, which is delaying the work on the Peroorkada-Vazhayila stretch.
The KWA recently dug up the renovated Attakulangara-Enchakkal road. TRDCL has requested the KRFB to sanction additional amount for the restoration of the road.
KWA plays the role of villain in a number of other road works too. The Nandavanam - Bakery - Model School stretch, Model School - Thampanoor - Overbridge stretch and Ulloor-Kochulloor stretch are some examples.
The construction of the new bridge is yet to start at Murinjapalam. The demolition of the old bridge has been completed. The TRDCL has asked for a 200-day time for the construction of a new bridge and approach road.
Meanwhile, around 20 trees need to be axed for developing the road at Vanchiyoor. The issue is still pending for want of approval.
The Thakaraparambu Flyover, which is the second flyover in the CRIP after Bakery Flyover, is still caught in the issue of rehabilitation of traders. A new proposal to shift the traders to Attakulangara has been suggested by TRIDA, which is awaiting approval from the Department of Local Self-Government.
Two cemeteries at Pattoor and the Railway Overbridge at Pettah are the cause for the delay in widening some stretches of the Airport-MLA Hostel Road.
