THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Government institutions may be the last to adopt modernisation measures.
But the Kerala State Film Development Corporation Ltd is an exception. In a move that would bring accolades from film lovers in the state, the KSFDC has decided to turn some of its theatres into multiplexes.
Multiplexes are making a foray into non-metros. The theatres under the KSFDC in Thiruvananthapuram, North Paravoor, Cherthala and Chittoor would be transformed into multiplexes.
“The multiplexes would have 400 seats. The existing theatres such as Kalabhavan and Kairali would be divided into two.The portion from the balcony would be another theatre,” Managing Director of KSFDC Sanjeeb Patjoshi said.
Beginning with Kalabhavan in Thiruvananthapuram, seven theatres in the state would have multiple screens. Currently, there are 10 theatres under the KSFDC which include Kairali/ Sree theatres in Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur and Kozhikode, Chitranjali Theatres in Cherthala, North Paravoor and Chittoor and Kalabhavan theatre in Thiruvananthapuram.
The KSFDC is mulling the technical issues in connection with the work. “Most of the theatres are almost 30 years old.
So discussion is progressing on the technical aspect of rework. The work will begin in December,” Patjoshi said.
The funds are expected to be raised with the support of the Financial Corporation. “Around Rs 1 crore will be required to convert each theatre into a multiplex,” Patjoshi said.
“Most of the seats in this 1,000-seat theatre usually remain vacant during the show. The 400-seat theatre would be more economically viable,” he said. “Also, the film lovers would be interested in multiplexes as they offer more choices,” he said.
The KSFDC is planning to begin works this month, probably after the International Film Festival of Kerala.
