What do the busy bee techies do when they get a weekend off? While
some go for an outing, party etc, some find time for social activities.
The Thiruvananthapuram chapter of Make a Difference (MAD) witnessed a
good participation of techies during its recruitment drive held
recently.
MAD, a youth volunteer network that provides soft skill training for underprivileged children, has more volunteers from colleges in the city. Techies too have been active volunteers of MAD from its very beginning in the city.
“Yes, this time, more techies attended the MAD recruitment. However, we could not include more than nine, since classes are held on Saturdays and Sundays. Saturdays are not off days for most of them,” said Munna, MAD volunteer.
Vinuju Nizar Yousuf, an employee of Technopark-based Allianz Corhill, has been a MAD volunteer since the Thiruvananthapuram chapter was launched in 2009. “Some of my friends in Technopark are active volunteers of MAD. We join the students on Saturdays and Sundays, which are off days for us. It requires a lot of commitment to be a MAD volunteer. You can’t just leave it halfway,” said Vinuju.
Vinuju said two days with the children provide an extremely refreshing time after five days of hectic work. “You must see how smart they are. There is nothing more refreshing than spending time with them,” said Vinuju, who holds classes for students at the Poojapura branch of MAD.
MAD has three other branches in the city, at Sreekariyam, Kazhakkoottam and Nalanchira.
Though time constraints prevent some techies from becoming a MAD volunteers, a good number are part of the noble cause by providing financial support. They are ‘Friends of MAD’, said Munna. In addition to individual support from Technopark, a number of companies such as Ernst and Young, Allianz Cronhill, UST Global etc are providing financial help for MAD as part their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
