With his slim figure and grey hair, fifty-year-old Anand gives you the impression of a frail, elderly man. But looks can be deceiving. This city-based businessman can defend himself in any precarious situation.

Thanks to a Krav Maga Boot Camp held in the city, Anand received self-defence tips from the country’s top-most instructor in the Israeli martial art, Vicky Kapoor.

Kapoor talked to Express about Krav Maga, his plans to open a training centre in the city and on self-defence.

Developed by the Israeli military after World War II, Krav Maga has no specific rules and equips one to face real-life situations.

“Krav Maga is not an art. It is a system and has different principles for different situations. Principles are different for military when the objective is to kill. For law enforcement agencies, the aim is to disarm or conquer. For women and children, it is self-defence and survival,” Kapoor said.

He said that anything, from empty hands to a pen, can be a tool for defending oneself. Kapoor, who is imparting training to various government organisations, said a Krav Maga training centre would come up in the city soon. The Kerala chapter of the International Krav Maga Federation has plans to start a centre near Museum.

Kapoor believes learning a martial art alone won’t help. Girls approaching Kapoor to learn Krav Maga will be advised to learn soccer first. “Practising football will give them the courage to move through a crowd, to kick and to run. If you know a self-defence tip and don’t have the energy to run, then what is the use?” he asked.

A 21-day course on Krav Maga may cost more than ` 1 lakh. Organised by the Kerala chapter of the International Krav Maga Federation, a seven-day boot camp was held in the city from August 20. The camp concluded on Sunday.

Kapoor has conducted Krav Maga sessions in all the southern cities. He will be leading a training session in Kochi next month.
