For those searching for ways to kick the butt, Technopark is the ideal location. Authorities imposed a blanket ban on smoking on the Technopark campus recently. Though a ban existed earlier too, the authorities have started enforcing it only in the past couple of weeks.

But the securitymen in Technopark have a tough time enforcing the ban. Smokers are given a warning every now and then. What worries the smokers is that there is no room for them in the 4-million square feet built-up space in Technopark. The smokers are taking refuge in nearby shops to get a puff.

Boards announcing the smoking ban and fine amount are placed everywhere. It also carries the name and mobile number of the officer to whom the case must be reported. Violators will have to pay a fine of Rs 200.

According to sources, a small fire that had broken out on Technocity campus recently had made the park authorities go in for a blanket ban on smoking on Technopark campus.

Interestingly, in spite of a ban on smoking, an outlet of the Indian Tobacco Company (ITC) is functioning at the Food Court in Technopark.

Meanwhile, smoker techies are not ready to budge that easily. Several mails are reportedly being sent to the park authorities requesting them to introduce a smoker’s corner for them.

“Even airports have space for smoking. We understand the need for a ban. But some space must be allotted for us. We have a stressful worklife and need some relaxation,” a techie said.

But, the ban is a boon for shops near the Technopark campus, where chain smokers often take refuge.
