NE monsoon set to arrive in state

18th October 2012 10:54 AM

The India Meteorological Department on Wednesday predicted that North East (NE) monsoon will set in over the state within the next 48 hours.
The state received widespread heavy rainfall for the third consecutive day on Wednesday under the influence of cyclonic circulations developed over the Bay of Bengal and Lakshadweep.  The state will continue to receive heavy rainfall till Sunday.
“This is a transition phase. Withdrawal of South West monsoon will coincide with the onset of NE monsoon in the state. The onset could be declared only when 51-75 per cent of rain gauge stations in coastal areas in Tamil Nadu get heavy rainfall. Though there was widespread rainfall in Tamil Nadu, coastal regions got only scattered rainfall on Wednesday. Conditions are favourable for the onset of NE monsoon within 48 hours,” said K Santhosh, IMD Director.
“The South West monsoon has started withdrawing from 15 degree north latitude. The wind pattern must change from the existing South Westerly to North Easterly. Wind speed over coastal Tamil Nadu must be 10-25 nautical miles per hour,” he said.
The NE monsoon rains will be marked by lightning and afternoon thundershowers.  Heavy downpour in a short span of time is another specialty. The IMD had predicted its onset after October 18. Meanwhile, South West monsoon ended in the state on a sour note, recording a 24 per cent deficiency in rainfall.
During the NE monsoon season, from October to December, the state is expected to get 48 cm rainfall. Last year, NE monsoon was 6 per cent deficient in the state.
