A ‘competition’ to watch you

THIRUVANATHAPURAM: You are being watched and that too from different angles. Surprised? It seems the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) and the Traffic Police are too obsessed about your security that both departments are competing to instal surveillance cameras at various points in the city. But for two different reasons.

Cameras installed by both the departments are keeping vigil on city residents at major junctions like Museum, Overbridge etc. The MVD is busy installing cameras at major points in the city,  including places where cameras installed by Keltron on behalf of the Traffic Police are already in operation. The Kerala IT Mission is in charge of installing cameras for the MVD.
When contacted, a senior Traffic official said that he was not aware of the move of the MVD. “We have not been informed. They might have some different purpose to install the cameras,” Traffic AC Shivakumar said.
Transport Commissioner T P Senkumar said that surveillance cameras were installed based on the orders of the Commissioner of Police. “This is part of installing cameras at major cities like Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi. In Thiruvananthapuram, such cameras will be installed at 44 locations. The purpose of the cameras installed by the police and MVD is different. So the case of duplication does not arise,” he said.
Senkumar added that cameras installed by the Traffic Police were of a temporary basis. Shivakumar, however, denied this.
Commissioner of Police Manoj Abraham too said the cameras installed by the police are meant for crime surveillance, while those of the MVD concentrate on traffic offences.
“The dome cameras installed by the police will have the feature to identify faces. These images can be compared with that of criminals in the wanted list. These cameras can be managed from the control room. The purpose is purely crime surveillance. Whereas, the cameras installed by the MVD will check only traffic offences,” he said.
The police have installed surveillance cameras at four major junctions in the city. The MVD has already installed 10 cameras and is planning to install 15 more soon.
