THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: If things go as planned, there will be utter chaos on the city roads once the work on the much-awaited Thakaraparambu Flyover begins. Thanks to the lack of proper planning, two major roads in the city will soon be blocked, leading to mayhem. The problem began with the authorities finding a spot for the temporary rehabilitation of traders for carrying out work on the flyover. Surprisingly, the authorities identified a road for the purpose.Temporary sheds are to be constructed on the road in front of the Central theatre, thus totally blocking the vehicular traffic along the busy road. With the closure of the Power House Road for piling works, there will be total disruption of traffic. One of the traders who is to be rehabilitated said: “I don’t understand how they got this weird idea to shift the shops to a road. The temporary sheds will be around 3 metres wide. No vehicular traffic will be possible since it is a narrow road. Now, vehicles moving to Karamana, Killippalam and Chalai are taking this route. With its closure, there will be heavy flow of traffic through Overbridge and Thampanoor.’’“The space adjacent to the Putharikandam Maidan belonging to the Transport Department will be an ideal location. We are writing a letter to Transport Minister V S Sivakumar, who led the discussions, to allot this space,” he added.TRIDA is in charge of constructing temporary sheds. Currently, TRIDA and Kerala Road Fund Board are going ahead with the construction of temporary sheds on the road in front of the Central theatre. They are planning to construct as many as 45 sheds to rehabilitate the traders. The work of Thakaraparambu Flyover was stuck on the issue of rehabilitation of traders."The project to construct sheds on the road is an absolute blunder. But I feel it is better to maintain silence as the work of the flyover seems to be important,” said an official involved with the road work.
