THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Mannan community and its king Raman Raja Mannan had a surprise gift in the budget presented by Finance Minister K M Mani on Monday. The Minister granted Rs 20 lakh for the lone tribal king in the state to construct a palace in Kovilmala in Idukki, which is the kingdom of Mannan tribe. Twenty-five-year-old Raman Raja Mannan alias N Binu, a graduate who was working as a scientist assistant at the Geographical Information System at Periyar Foundation, was recently crowned as the 16th king of the community after the demise of former king Ariyan Raja Mannan.
When contacted over phone, Binu expressed happiness over the budget allocation and thanked the Finance Minister. Binu said he would construct the ‘palace’ at Kovilmala with the amount. Kovilmala aka Kozhimala is the traditional headquarters of the Mannan tribe. The living conditions of the tribals in this area are very poor. The people face the problem of availability of drinking water and majority of houses lack toilet facilities. There is only an LP school at this area.
Binu feels all these issues must be addressed. “I had heard that the government has allotted a fair amount for the development of tribal communities. I hope we will get the deserving amount for the development of the community,” he said.
