When Mary, an employee with UST Global, started dancing at the atrium in Bhavani building in Technopark, many were taken aback by the rare move. Techies, who were at the atrium to see the Women’s Day celebrations on March 8, had a jaw-dropping experience when more and more girls joined Mary to perform a well-choreographed dance. Soon, male colleagues too joined them.  The 8-minute dance began with a western song and ended with a ‘dappan koothu’ number. The highlight of the Women’s Day celebration organised by UST Global was this ‘flash mob’ performed by more the 26 techies. Flash mob is becoming a new trend among the techies. In flash mob, a group of people suddenly assemble in a public place and perform something together in a group. For techies, their common act is often a well-choreographed dance. Flash mob was being organised in Technopark for the second time. Techies in Infosys have the credit of introducing flash mob in Technopark. Flash mob was organised as part of Infosys’s Christmas celebration last December. The Infy act, which began with Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat it’, had won much accolades from the techie community. The flash mob organised by UST was choreographed by Pradeep Kumar of Mystic Monkeys. “More than 40 people are needed to arrange a flash mob. But only 29 were available, maybe because of their hectic work schedule. We didn’t get much time to practise. But we got an enormous response from the viewers,” said Pradeep. Boney Fernandes, an employee of UST Global, was part of the team. “We tried to keep it a surprise till the last moment. Only our close friends knew about the programme. When we started performing at the atrium at 11 am, a big crowd gathered and supported us,” he said.  The YouTube video of the performance has so far seen more than 10,000 hits. The surprise element, excellent performance of the techies and teamwork have all made flash mob a popular event among techies.
