Cricket fever has gripped Technopark with the tenth edition of Technopark Premier League (TPL) entering the knockout phase. As many as 36 teams are participating in the knockout matches. Nail-biting matches are being played by the teams bearing the names of famous cricketers. Matches are played on Saturdays and Sundays.
The final is expected to be held on April 22 or 23. Interestingly, the prize distribution day will witness the most interesting match; the winning team v/s rest of Technopark.
One of the much-awaited events of Technopark, TPL, this year, is witnessing the participation of 108 teams. Apart from Technopark companies, teams of Asianet, HDFC etc, which operate from Technopark, too are participating. Some companies such as UST Global and Revenue Med have three teams. City-based Murugan Cricket Club supports TPL by providing umpires and scorers.
Subramonian, in charge of the TPL, said though TPL began as an entertainment for techies in their hectic work schedule, the tournament is now turning to be more serious. “Techies undergo vigorous coaching for the TPL. Some are practising at places like LNCPE. Technopark has a good cricket ground and area for net practice,” he said.
“Some teams have real star players. They are crowd-pullers too. There are a large number of viewers for the TPL,” he said. The techies have dress codes for the matches.
The TPL began in the year 2002. This year, the tournament opened on January 28.
The league matches having 8 overs have been completed. After the knockout matches with 10 overs, only 16 teams will participate in the pre-quarters. Eight teams will compete in the quarterfinals.
Only four teams will enter the semifinals. The final and semifinals have 15 overs.
The Technopark authorities are planning to introduce prize money for the winners next time. Currently, the winner gets a trophy. Revenue Med lifted the trophy last time.
