THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Enter the word ‘adipoli’ in Malayalam Wikitionary and you would get not less than three definitions of the word commonly used by Gen Y.  On Saturday, Malayalam wikitionary, the wiki-based open dictionary, has crossed one lakh entries.

The seven-year-old wikitionary project is one of the major projects of the Malayalam Wikipedia movement. The Malayalam Wikitionary has 1,00,670 entries so far.

According to Jacob Jose, one of the key contributors, the Malayalam Wikitionary has 1,966 contributors, of which only 32 are active.

As many as 10,573 definitions were added in the year 2011 alone. By the end of 2011, there were more than 50,000 Malayalam definitions and more than 20,000 definitions of English words. It has definitions of all commonly used words.

Apart from Malayalam and English, the Malayalam Wikitionary has definitions of more than 258 Tamil words, 257 Japanese words, 151 Hindi/Sanskrit words, 134 Korean words, 48 Arabic/ Urdu words, and a number of Chinese, French, Russian, Dutch, Hebrew, Bengali and Greek words.

The Malayalam Wikitionary has the definition of 80 percent of the commonly used words in English. However, the wikitionary needs to modify the meanings of as many as 25,000 English words.

Wikimedian Junaid alone had contributed definitions of more than 10,000 words. Inclusion of pictures gave clarity to a number of words in the wikitionary. A contributor Dinesh Vellakkattu provided more than 100 pictures to the wikitionary.

The wikitionary project began in August 4, 2004. The wikitionary has definitions, origin of a word, pronunciation, model quotes, synonyms, antonyms, translations etc. Any new user can log in to the wikitionary project to be a part of the project.
