Two weeks after the onset, south-west monsoon is still deficient in the state.
There has been a 23 per cent shortage in rain in the state till Tuesday. Against the normal 386 mm rainfall, the state so far got only 297 mm rainfall. However, reports of the last six years show that the situation was no different all these years. Last two years were the only exception when the state received 69 per cent and 3 per cent excess rainfall in 2011 and 2010 respectively in the first two weeks of the monsoon season.
The record of monsoon in the state in the first two weeks of the season shows that rainfall was deficient in 2009 (-33 per cent), 2008 (-37 per cent), 2007 (-17 per cent), 2006 (-66 per cent), and 2005 (-16 per cent).
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), however, considers a deviation of -19 to +19 as normal. IMD informed that south-west monsoon is showing an increasing trend and the rainfall will be normal in the coming days. Last week, the monsoon was 55 per cent deficient.
The onset of monsoon was a bit delayed this year. It reached the state on June 5, four days after the expected date. In the last six years, the onset of monsoon was in the last week of May. This year’s monsoon could be compared to monsoon in 2005 when the onset was in June 7. ‘’In 2005, monsoon rainfall till June 19 was 16 per cent deficient. However, we consider it as normal monsoon,’’ said P S Biju, scientist at IMD.
Surprisingly, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Wayanad districts show poor performance during the south-west monsoon season in the past six years, except 2011. This year, monsoon is scanty (between -60 per cent and -90 per cent) in Thiruvananthapuram (-71 per cent), Pathanamthitta (-63 per cent) and Kollam (-61 per cent). Monsoon was deficient (between -20 per cent and -59 per cent) in Wayanad (-47 per cent), Kottayam (-39 per cent), Idukki (-31 percent), Ernakulam (-45 per cent) and Alappuzha (-59 per cent). Thrissur (-7 per cent), Palakkad (-2 per cent), Malappuram (-10 per cent), Kozhikode (11 per cent), Kasargode (14 per cent) and Kannur (0 per cent) are the districts which reported normal rainfall this season.
