Techies fail to connect with gym

Remya Nambeesan’s husky voice in the song ‘Vijana surabhi...’ did not seem to distract the techies working out at the gym. Those present at the state-of-the-art gymnasium at Technopark Club on Technopark campus seemed keen to use the maximum facilities within their limited time.

The club offers unmatched facilities to  health-conscious techies. However, only less than 10 per cent of the techies turn up at the club. The club has around 2,500 members, most of whom are floating members.

In addition to separate gymnasiums for men and women, there is a swimming pool, badminton and table tennis courts, facility for beach volley, AC rooms, restaurant etc at the club. It also offers a venue for holding meetings and celebrations.

The club has corporate membership as well as individual membership. Individual membership costs only around ` 3,500 per year. Is the membership fee too high, keeping the techies away? “It’s just an excuse. You can spend ` 30 for a juice and not for your exercise?” asks Satish Babu, director of the International Centre for Free and Open Source Software (ICFOSS), who visits the gym whenever he is on the campus.

Rohit Arora of Aptara and Ankit Jindal of UST Global, working out at the gym, expressed satisfaction with the facility available at the Club. “But, we rarely meet the instructor at the gym because he is not available when we come,” Rohit said.

There is a separate gym for women. Around 50 women and 150 men regularly use the gymnasium. The swimming pools are exclusively opened for women between 4 pm and 5 pm.  According to Club administrator Sasidharan Nair, the club is gearing up for a revamp. “Three more shuttle courts are planned. The Technopark authorities are planning to develop the swimming pool from the current 18 m to 25 m,” he said.

Lifetime membership at the club is pegged at ` 1 lakh. There are around 100 life members, including those from film industry such as Suresh Gopi, Maniyan Pillai Raju etc. The place is a major shooting location too.

The club arranges a tournament for techies every year. This year, the tournament will be held between July 10 and August 22.
