Tropical storm Doksuri, which is moving westwards in the south China sea, is likely to strengthen monsoon currents. The tropical storm, which is expected to hit near the Hong Kong coast on Saturday, will give a boost to the monsoon, believes the India Meteorological Department.

In addition to the ‘Doksuri’ factor, an upper cyclonic circulation near the Orissa coast too is becoming favourable for monsoon. State is expected to get good rainfall by the first week of July.

Nearly a month after the onset of south west monsoon, the state got 31 percent deficient monsoon rainfall. Against the long period average of 62 cm rainfall, the state got only 43 cm so far. Except four, all other districts in the state got deficient rainfall. In the IMD definition, a deviation of -19 to +19 percent is considered as normal. Considering this, Kannur, Kasargode, Kozhikode and Palakkad received normal rainfall this season.

“An increase in monsoon activity is expected in the coming days under the influence of cyclonic storm in Pacific and upper cyclonic circulation near Orissa coast. But it would take some time to make up as the monsoon is 31 percent deficient in the state,” said K Santhosh, director, IMD, Thirvananthapuram.

“The trend shows that even if rainfall activity is less in June, heavy rainfall occurs in July. Heavy rainfall is expected on July 5 and 6,” he added.

“The tropical cyclonic storm is expected to move westwards and will hit Hong Kong on Monday. The reminiscence of cyclone will pass through Hong Kong and Mynamar and will emerge into Bay of Bengal. This will strengthen the monsoon currents in the coming days,” Santhosh said.

The state witnessed the onset of monsoon on June 5. However, wind was not favourable for rainfall. The second forecast issued by IMD last week too predicted normal monsoon for the country.
