The district-level operations of the ‘Nirbhaya Project’ saw a
troubled start on Friday, with the toll-free number 18004251400 going
out of service. Just a day after the District Information Office
released a statement on the launch of service, Express found that the
number was not working.
Not just that, even members of the District Jagratha Samithi, which is part of Nirbhaya’s district committee, were not aware of the toll-free service, which was expected to work round the clock.
Nirbhaya project was launched by the Social Welfare Department of the State Government to support women and children facing abuse. It aimed at assisting trafficked women and children in finding shelter. The project has been launched in the district with the support of the Police Department, District Social Welfare Officer and jagratha samitis of the District Panchayat.
On Thursday, the district committee of Nirbhaya project was convened with District Panchayat president Remani P Nair as chairperson. Additional District Magistrate, senior police officials, District Social Welfare Officer, Childline workers, Child Welfare Committee members and Kudumbashree members, among others, attended.
Nirbhaya is an ambitious project inspired by activist Sunitha Krishnan’s ‘Prajwala’, which provides shelter to abused women and children. A visit to Prajwala had surprised Chief Minister Oommen Chandy as most of the rehabilitated women were Malayalis. This prompted the launch of the Nirbhaya project in the state in June.
Other contacts numbers given along with the toll-free number are 8547702817 (District Jagratha Samiti), 9497990014 (police) and 8907847094 (District Social Welfare Officer).
