THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  Don’t get surprised if you see sashaying beauties instead of a military parade at the Pangode Military Station, this summer. For the first time in the state, the Indian Army is conducting a beauty pageant on the lines of the coveted Navy Queen pageant of the Southern Naval Command. The Army Wives Welfare Association and Army Officers Institute are busy sorting out applications. One lucky girl would wear the ‘May Queen’ crown by the third week of May.

Just like the Navy Queen competition, Army too had invited applications from civilians. April 20 was the last date for sending applications. “We have received around 50 applications so far. Most of the applications are  from within the station. After an initial screening, the contestants would be selected to the finals to be held in the third week of May in Pangode. The preliminary screening would be held on May 5,” Madhu R Shekar, Defence spokesperson said.

Organising such an event for the first time, the Army is confident of conducting the pageant on a regular basis in the coming years. Will the Brigadier dance for the event just like the SNC chief shook his leg for the Navy Ball?  “No, there won’t be anything like that,”said the defence spokesperson.

Though other military stations are conducting beauty pageants for the past several years, such an event is taking place in the state for the first time. Army sources said the event would be organised in a grand fashion in the coming years.

The title would be known as ‘May Queen’ just as ‘Navy Queen’ was known in its initial years. Army is yet to decide on the stages of the competition and the prize money. The organisers are looking for sponsors. Anyway, the military station in Pangode might have a ‘cool’ summer this time.
